Community Health Workers Training
Community Health Worker Training-That prepares you to serve your community and F.A.C.E. Community Challenges.
The Central Florida Black Nurses Association is pleased to be an authorized education provider for the Florida Certification Board for Community Health Workers. The CHWs training offered as a benefit to the community. Qualified nurses teach the 30-hour Community Health Worker’s classes, which educate individuals on the roles and responsibilities of a CHW.
There is a total of 7 learning sessions. The interactive learning sessions include information and application activities with each session ranging from 3.5 hours to 5 hours. Upon completion of the training, the CHWs can work as a volunteer and employee in clinics and physician’s offices, being advocates of health and wellness and facilitators of access to health services. Individuals who desire to become Certified Community Health Workers must have 500 hours of work experience as a volunteer or employee within the past five years before taking the CHW exam.

- proposed location,

- approximate number of participants for the classes.
What is a Community Health Worker?
CHW by virtue of their trusted status in the community, serve as a liaison, link and
intermediary between health services and the community to facilitate access to
services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery in the
communities they serve.
Who can be a Community Health Worker?
Anyone desiring to be a community health representative, promotor of health, public health professional, or any other workforce with compassion for the health, wellbeing, and health equity of residents in their communities can serve as a CHW.
What are the duties of a Community Health Workers?
CHW are trained to:
- disseminate information on health topics and available resources,
- support and advocate for health equity and health needs,
- make informal referrals to facilitate resources,
- follow-up through home visits or office visits,
- conduct surveys,
- monitor blood pressure, and
- give first aid
What positions/job titles can Community Health Workers have?
CHWs can work in settings such as in the community, physician offices, and clinics. With training, CHWs can function as Community Health Educator, Health Communicator; Outreach Worker; or Health Advocate.
Do Community Health Worker get paid?
CHWs can volunteer or purse job opportunities and be a paid employee.
What training is required to be a Community Health Worker?
A total of 30-hours instructor-led training offered by an authorized Community Health
Worker Provider is required to be a CHW.
The classes consist of seven modules. They are:
- Communication and Education
- Resources
- Advocacy
- Foundations of Health
- Professional Responsibility
- Self-care
- course elective
What is needed to become a Certified Community Health Worker?
A minimum of a high school diploma, general equivalency degree or higher and a total of 500 hours of work and/or volunteer experience required. The work experience must be in the areas of 1) Communication and Education: tasks related to community education, 2) Resources: tasks related to linking community members with available
health/social services, 3) Advocacy: tasks related to advocating for the community’s
health/service to be eligible to take the certification exam.
The Mandatory Forms needed to apply for the exam are:
- CHW Work Experience Verification Form
- CHW Professional Recommendation for Certification Form
- CHW Training Verification Form. At the end of the 30-hour training course, the CFBNA provides a certificate to individuals who have met the course requirements.
